Alleged thief shot in botched robbery attempt at downtown jewelry store

KNBC

LAPD patrol cars cordon off the 600 block of S. Broadway following a botched jewelry store robbery in which one alleged robber was shot.

Authorities say a man attempting to rob a downtown jewelry store was shot and injured today by an off-duty cop inside the store, although two accomplices got away.

The incident happened this afternoon on the 600 block of South Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. There are several jewelry stores on this block -- Aquarius, Del Amo and Gold Castle, to name a few -- and police did not immediately specify which one had been hit.

According to news reports, three men tried to hold up the store at around 2:30 p.m. today. NBC says that at least two of the men entered the store and “took hold” of a guard inside, according to a police spokesperson.

That’s when an off-duty reserve sheriff’s deputy saw the robbery attempt in progress and shot one of the robbers, according to reports. The man stumbled out of the store and collapsed. He remains in the hospital in stable condition.

Dapper jewelry thief bolts from Century City store with $65K in Rolex watches (video)

The Los Angeles Police Department today released video footage of a sharp-dressed thief who asked to see a pair of expensive Rolex watches, waited patiently for the items to be set before him, then grabbed them both and bolted out the door.

Police said the incident occurred at about 4:50 p.m. last Thursday, May 10 at a jewelry store at Century City Shopping Center on the 10200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. (They did not say which store, but a Tiffany & Co. is located there.)

In the footage, the man can be seen in a pressed button-down shirt, with glasses and a goatee, looking around the store as he waits for the watches to appear. Then he suddenly grabs them and bolts from the store as a security guard lunges at him.

The stolen Rolexes together are valued at $64,900, police said.
