Triathletes now have diagnosis - Trizophrenia -from “Frazz’s” Jef Mallett, inveterate biker, runner, & swimmer.

Just in time for the LA Marathon, comic strip artist Jeff Mallett joins Off-Ramp to talk about his other love, besides his wife, his dog, and art: participating in triathlons. He explains it all -- including the goofy grin and his "TriCave" in his new book, "Trizophrenia: Inside the Minds of a Triathlete."

I’ve posted the long version of Sharon McNary’s interview with Jef, which includes their rundown of favorite SoCal races, why a long stream of drool winging from your head is a good thing, and a visit from the family dog.

The item also includes a link through which you can buy Jef's book and have it benefit KPCC! (It's a special arrangement with Amazon.)

The Original Governator – Jesse Ventura comes to KPCC

I’d like to say I recognized the twinkle in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s eye when I interviewed him at Jesse Ventura’s gubernatorial inauguration back in the 1990s, but I’m sure the event planted a seed. (“I could do this. It would be fahn-tah-stick!”)

I’m willing to bet the thought of running for Governor would not have occurred to our Governator if Ventura, his buddy, hadn’t become the Original Governator.

Ventura – maybe not the best Minnesota Governor ever, but far from the worst - came to KPCC’s Mohn Broacast Center in Pasadena today for the Patt Morrison show.

Jesse showed up a couple hours early for Patt Morrison, and was hanging out in our newsroom. He’s let his hair grow out – to put off people, he says, who ask if he’ll be running for public office again – and he was chomping on a long unit cigar. He also borrowed an office to make a few phone calls.

We reminisced about the old days in Minnesota, when he was talk show host on KFAN and KSTP, and he told a story I can’t repeat here.

What??!! I told you I can't repeat it. Sorry.

St Pat’s Eats for the Cheap – Try The Buggy Whip

Friday night, Julian and I were in the mood for a supper club, and we’re frankly not in love with the Gypsy violinist who plays at Columbo’s on Friday evenings, so we headed south, toward LAX.

Just off the La Tijera Blvd exit of the 405, you’ll find The Buggy Whip.

It’s an old, old school supper club – complete with long bar and friendly bartender, a quiet dining room for those who don’t like music, and a dining room off the bar with banquettes arrayed around a grand piano.

The prices are a little high, but you can get out without paying a fortune if you don’t get the three-pound Porterhouse and lobster. And on St Pat’s Day, they have a hell of a bargain. Here’s the flier I found on the bar.

My only complaint about The Buggy Whip is not about the place so much as the patrons. People: would it hurt you to put on a pair of pants when you go out? Geeez.

More wind energy in the Mojave, plus cool video shows how they erect those turbines.

(Photo by Herman Trabish. Note the real rainbow, which Terra-Gen probably hopes is not just symbolic.)

Herman Trabish, of New Energy News, covered the groundbreaking of a new wind energy installation in the Tehachapi Wind Resource Area in California’s Mojave Desert.

“The Tehachapi Wind Resource Area has been a major wind power generating region since the early 1980s when a visionary group of California New Energy pioneers began building utility-scale wind projects in the Altamont Pass near San Francisco, the San Gorgonio Pass near Palm Springs and the Tehachapi Mountains.”

Herman’s also posted a cool video that shows turbines going up out East.
