The US premiere of Athol Fugard's new play, The Train Driver, is this Friday (for previews), with an official opening Saturday the 16th at The Fountain Theatre.
(Fugard by Martha Swope)
I talked with Fugard about the play at length Tuesday. He said it was sparked by reading a news item about a black South African woman who killed herself and her kids by standing on the tracks and letting a train hit them. Their misery was over, but the white train driver was traumatized, and in Fugard's play, takes a long and important psychological journey after the incident.
We talked about the play, but I also asked Fugard what has gone wrong in his country, since the end of apartheid came with so much promise for a prosperous and healthy society.
