Saturday at 2pm, I'm hosting the Los Angeles Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats showing of Casablanca, at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills.
Of course I'll give a talk about the movie, but I'd love to add some special stories about the movie from KPCC listeners. Tell me about your "beautiful friendship" with Casablanca.
-- Do you remember the first time you saw the movie and what you thought?
-- When do you watch it now? (Sad? Happy? Need a hug? Missing mom and dad?)
-- Remember the first time you saw it on the big screen?
-- Was it a date? How did it go? Still with them?
To prime the pump, I will admit that I was disappointed when I first saw Casablanca when I was about 18.
I'd seen and preferred To Have and Have Not, which I thought was funnier, moved faster, and featured Lauren Bacall and Hoagy Carmichael. (Ingrid Bergman bugged me.)
Now that I'm older, have experienced more pain, love, and loss, and know more about history, I prefer Casablanca, which is miles deeper. I can watch it over and over.
