The U.S. Marshals Service, whose officers swept and surveyed KPCC in advance of Justice Sotomayor’s visit here with Patt Morrison, brought along some four-legged help: Gamma, a seven-year-old yellow Lab.
She works for the explosives detection unit of ATF. She was originally raised by Guiding Eyes for the Blind, but when she was 14 months old, the ATF found that she was a whiz at detecting explosives – over 19,000 different combinations, including ammo and guns.
She was commissioned in 2007, and her job extends to protecting dignitaries, and searching crime scenes. When she’s not on the job, Gamma loves fetch and tug of war. She’s based out of Phoenix.
How do I know all this? Because each dog working with the Marshals Service gets his or her own "baseball card," the dog’s picture with badge and the Stars and Stripes in the background.
I now have two. I’m going to collect the whole set!
