8:27 p.m...yes, I know, its 11:27 p.m. EST. My apologies. I am guessing Romney will enjoy good reviews of this speech. He was mostly businesslike - his nature, probably - but also showed more passion than he usually does.
8:23 p.m. : big white balloons; medium size red, white and blue balloons; tiny confetti flittering down upon the heads of Republicans from Alaska to Puerto Rico. Its an impressive site.
8:17 p.m. : The balloons have dropped. People are popping them as a vocalist sings "America the Beautiful." A smiling Mitt and Ann Romney, extended family, plus the Paul Ryans standing at the front of the stage. Is this our next president and vice president? We'll know in 69 days, presumably. Unless we have hanging chads.
8:15 p.m. Speaks of a more prosperous future.
"Let us begin that future for America tonight. And may god bless teh United States of America."
Paul Ryan joins Mitt Romney on stage, confetti drops. Now the Romney and Ryan families are on stage together.
8:10 p.m. : Romney slips in his support for traditioal marriage.
8:07 p.m. : Most effective line so far: Obama ran to slow the rise of the oceans. PAULSE And heal the planet. PAULSE I'm running to help you and your family. APPLAUSE>
8:06 p.m. : "I'm running for president to create a better future."
Paul Ryan and I have five point plan:
1st. "every parent should have a choice" on education.
2nd "We'll made trade work for American by forging new trade agreements."
Missed number three.
4th we will cut the deficit and put America back on track to a balanced budget.
5th we will champion small businesses by lower taxes, relaxing regulation, and repealing Obamacare (Huge applause.)
8:02 p.m. : "This adminsitration has crusehed the middle class." "Gas prices have doubled."
Unemployment too high, says Romney, "These aren't strangers. they are our brothers and sisters.
7:59 p.m. : Romney says the idea is to create tomorrow's prosperity with free enterprise, "not redistribute today's." "This president cannot tell you you're better off than you were for years ago."
"Today, its time to turn the page." "Now is the time to restore the promise of America."
7:56 p.m. : Romney is talking about Bain Capital. Mentions how Bain helped revive Staples and The Sports Authority. "These are American success stories."
"And yet the centerpiece of the president's campaign is attacking success." In America, we celebrate success, we don't apologize for success."
7:54 p.m. : "Hope and change was powerful." "If you felt excitement when you voted for Barrack Obama four years ago, shouldn't you feel that way now."
7:53 p.m. : In America, we look to communities, families and faithes for our strenth.
7:51 p.m. : I knew Ann's job as a mom was a lot more important than mine. Cameras pan to Ann Romney.
7:47 p.m. : Romney said his father gave his mother a rose every day. "That's how she found out he had died. There was no rose.' Romney's voice tightens.
7:43 p.m. : Woman in a greenish dress below the NPR booth shouts out during Romney's speech. Witnesses said she shouted "People over profits, Democracy is not a business." Others drown her out with "USA, USA."
7:39 p.m. : Romney: "Freedom" is why people came to America. "This is the essence of the American expeince. We have always felt a special kinship with the future.:
Every family in America wanted this to be a time when they could get ahead. Every new coleage graduate thought they'd have a new job by now. "Its not just what we wanted Its not just what we expected. Its what Americans deserved"
7:36 p.m. : FLASH: Romney accepts nomination for president. "Today, I ask you to walk by my side to a better future." He recognizes Paul Ryan early. "in the days ahead, you'll get to know Paul Ryan better." "I love how he is not embarassed about how much he loves his mother." "But Paul I still like the playlist on my iPod better than yours."
7:32 p.m. : Romney walk down isle "stage left" - opposite Calif. delegation He is shaking hands. Country music plays in the background. Peope are clapping in unison. This could take a second for him to get to the podium.
7:25 p.m. : How DO the Democrats respond to Clint Eastwood? A colleague suggests Wiliam Shatner. No, that's not right. Mr. Sulu?
7:22 p.m. : "Almight god is the source of all we have" gets a lot of applause. "We're special"
7:20 p.m. : Rubio: "Our problem is not that he is a bad person. Our problem is that he is a bad president." "Do you think he is watching tonight?'
7:18 p.m. : Mitt Romney up next.
7:16 p.m. : Now United States Senator Marco Rubio, once a VP possibility. Grandfather said "There was no limit to how far I could go because I am an America." Rubio: "Its easy to forget how special America is."
7:14 p.m. : Eastwood: "OK, you want to make my day. I'll start it, you finish. OK, you wanna... and the crowd yells 'make my day.'
7:13 p.m. : Eastwood: "We don't hae to be mental masochists and vote for someone just because he's in office.".
7:12 p.m. : "When somebody does not do the job, we've got to let him go." Eastman draws his finger across his throat.
7:09 p.m. : its a fasincating device, and Eastwood is pulling it off...this converation with an imaginary Mr. Obama. "I think its time for a business man, a stellar businessman." " You want to tell Mr. Romney what?" Eastman says to the chair. "Oh he can't do that to himself."
7:07 p.m. : Eastwood pretends to interview "Mr. Obama" in an empty chair on stage.
7:06 p.m. : Eastwood: This administration hasn't done enough to attack unemployement. "Its time for somebody else to come along and solve the problem."
7:04 p.m. : Clint Eastwood: I know you don't believe it, but there are conservatives in Hollywood. "We just don't hotdog it a lot" like Democrats.
7:02 p.m. : Clint Eastwood has arrived. They like 'em. A lot. The applause continues.
6:55 p.m. : "Ya know, I cant explain love," Romney says in a video. It shows Ann with the babies. Mitt is seen playing with the kids. Very sweet, really.
6:46 p.m. : Crowd chants "USA, USA" after Mike Eruzioni of Gold Medal US Hockey team speaks about Romney's work on the Winter Olympics.
6:42 p.m. : I'm back. Somebody kicked over my "mult box" - that the box we plug our cords into to get the sound of the speakers. Someone ripped out the cord on the other side that provides the feed. We have a new box. I am the comeback radio guy.
6:20 p.m. : Have I mentioned the balloons yet. Just hanging there for Mitt and Paul at the end of the night.
6:14 p.m. : Former Mass Lt. Gov, who worked with Mitt, touts Romney's record on cutting taxes and improving education.
6:11 p.m. : This is fasciating. Another testimonial for Bain Capital. Another businessman says "my life is better now because of Bain Capital." "I can't imagine anyone better to turn around this country," referring to Romney.
9:07 p.m. : Bain Capital takes center stage at the RNC. We are seeing a video now that start with "Bain Capital Building Business." The video features the founder of Steel Dynamics praises Bain's investment in his company.
9 p.m. : Woman with a big bottle of white wine just offered me a glass in the press box. She's walking up and down the row. She says she's from an energy company. (I declinded).
8:58 p.m. : From a transcript of White's speech: "When our partner's daughter went missing in New York, Mitt said, "We can't just stand by and do nothing. We need to go find her." He closed down the entire office, took all of us to New York, and mobilized a search effort. Within days, we found her. And a mom, a dad, and a daughter were reunited."
8:56 p.m. : White tells of Mitt shutting down the office and organizing a search team for a missing daughter.
8:51 p.m. : Romney's close friend and old Bain Capital partner Bob White on the stage voucing for Mitt's integrity. "I was there when Mitt turned around desperate situations; fixed big, broken things; and had a profoundly positive impact on people's lives."
8:42 p.m. Eastern Standard Time : Friends and fellow Mormons take to the stage at the National Republican Convention to of Mitt Romney's "extraordinary compassion." One couple says he brought fireworks to their dying son in the hospital. "When I see Mitt Romney, I know him to be a loving father, a man of faith."
