Mayoral candidates Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti are in a dead heat, according to polls released by the Los Angeles Times and ABC 7.

Los Angeles mayor race 2013 Two surveys released in as many days differ on which candidate leads in the mayoral primary, but both polls agree – it’s close.

A Survey USA/ ABC 7 poll released Monday found Controller Wendy Greuel leading the pack with 28 percent, though Councilman Eric Garcetti was hot on her heels at 26 percent. From there, the survey found former prosecutor Kevin James at 15 percent; Councilwoman Jan Perry at 12 percent; and former tech executive Emanuel Pleitez at 9 percent.

A survey released Sunday, from USC Price and the Los Angeles Times, placed Garcetti in the lead at 27 percent. Greuel was close behind with 25 percent. James remained at 15 percent, with Perry at 14 percent and Pleitiez rounding out the field with 5 percent.

The top two finishers will move on to the May 21 primary. (If the polls are wrong and one candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote Tuesday, that would eliminate the need for the runoff.)

For months, Greuel and Garcetti have been neck-and-neck not just in the polls but in fundraising, too. The latest reports filed with the Ethics Commission show Greuel with $4.4 million to Garcetti’s $4.3 million. Each candidate will also receive $667,000 in matching funds.
