Mayor Eric Garcetti announced appointments to the Board of Recreation and Parks Monday, including the wife of a San Fernando Valley councilman.

Recreation and Parks operates 420 parks in Los Angeles. The commission is responsible for overseeing the operations of the department.

"Our city parks are places where millions of Angelenos gather, learn and play," Garcetti said. "Our commissioners are committed to increasing and improving open space for nature and recreation within our dense urban area."

Kafi Blumenfield, wife of Councilman Bob Blumenfield, was appointed to the panel. She is the former president and CEO of Liberty Hill Foundation. (The mayor's wife Amy Wakeland is a former member of the foundation's board.) A spokeswoman for Garcetti said the mayor does not see any conflict of interest with the appointment.

This is not the first time the Garcetti Administration has selected the wife of a city councilmen for a position. Last year, Garcetti hired Gail Koretz, wife of Councilman Paul Koretz, to work on the city's external relations.

The mayor also appointed Misty M. Sanford, a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson, and Iris Zuniga, chief operating officer of the Youth Policy Institute. Sylvia Patsaouras, who was appointed by the mayor in August, will remain on the board, as will Lynn Alvarez.

The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Los Angeles City Council.
