Count the homeless with socks
What an incentive. I'm listening to Alex Cohen's interview now with Norma Vega, who heads the LA Mayor's census office. The US Census Bureau counts the homeless over a three day period in late March and, to count as many as possible, LA is enticing people to come in and be counted and get a free pair of socks.
I take my socks for granted. I get a hole in a pair, I can afford another. My feet get cold, I can put on a pair and get cozy on the couch. Obviously, not everyone can and, it turns out, homeless people (even those who were middle class homeowners a year or two ago), don't have the same luxury.
You can donate socks toward this effort at any LA police station, LA city hall, or other locations you'll find at www. lacounts2010.org.
No, it doesn't solve homelessness, nor will it benefit everyone who sleeps in their car or on the street. It's a small step. But it's something.
