This is Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony's final year leading the LA Archdiocese. The Pope yesterday named San Antonio, TX Archbishop Jose Gomez as Mahony's replacement next February. That's when Mahony turns 75 and, according to papal rules, must retire.
I attended Damien High School in La Verne, an all-boys Catholic school, one of a handful of Protestants each year. I had an arms'-length relationship with priests (they were teachers, not spiritual advisors) and occasionally saw Mahony say Mass.
Looking back on Roger Mahony's 25 years leading the LA Archdiocese, can you point to highlights other than the priest sexual abuse debacle? Mahony, you may remember, signed off on a $660 million dollar settlement. But is this all he's known for?
