While serving as pastor of the Dolores Mission parish in Boyle Heights, Father Boyle created Homeboy Industries in 1988 to offer support, job training, tattoo removal and rehabilitation to gang members in the greater Los Angeles area. Today, Homeboy Industries is the largest gang intervention program in the country. In his new book, Father Boyle draws from his 20+ years of working with the “homeboys” and “homegirls” to present their personal stories and show us the despair and desperation that lead to gang involvement. He provides an unflinching look at the struggles of these young men and women and movingly reveals how the power of unconditional love can heal troubled lives.
Tattoos on the Heart has been on the LA Times best-seller list for 16 weeks and is one of three finalists for the 2010 Southern California Independent Booksellers Association award in the category of nonfiction.
