It is spring in the English countryside, the season when Lady Billows and her festival committee must select a May Queen. Disastrously, no maiden of sufficient virtue can be found, so Albert Herring, a meek mama’s boy, becomes the village’s first May King. Humiliated, the lad rebels with a drunken spree that the village busybodies will never forget.
James Conlon conducts an acclaimed Paul Curran production from the Santa Fe Opera, hailed as “a corking good time” (The New Mexican). Fast-rising tenor charmer Alek Shrader, reprising the role of his Santa Fe triumph, makes his LA Opera debut as Albert Sopranos Janis Kelly and Christine Brewer share the role of the imperious Lady Billows.
Albert Herring is the second in a series of operas celebrating the upcoming centenary of the legendary English-language composer, Benjamin Britten.
