HOSOI: Skateboarder Inmate Junkie Pastor
Z-Boys were his idols, skateboarding his god and gravity his nemesis. A professional by the age of 13, Christian Hosoi was a bad-boy rock-star athlete celebrated as the best vertical and aerial skateboarder in the world. His only real rival, Tony Hawk, admits, “Christian was my biggest competition and when he was on fire, he was unbeatable.” But his fast life in the celebrity spotlight led to drug addiction, arrest, time in prison and ultimately a commitment to Christianity and return to success in the skateboarding world.
KPCC hosted Christian Hosoi at the Crawford Family Forum to talk about his dramatic rise and fall on the board and off – with punk-rocker and entertainment lawyer Joe Escalante, host of "Barely Legal Radio,” and co-author of Hosoi’s memoir, surfing and skateboarding writer Chris Ahrens.
