HALF THE SKY: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide

KPCC and Community Cinema presented a special screening of HALF THE SKY: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a documentary film series based on the best-selling book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. This screening previewed one of six stories featured in the mini-series. Examining the issue of sex trafficking in Cambodia, where 30 percent of prostitutes are children, the story centers on Meg Ryan and Nicholas Kristof meeting Somaly Mam, who herself was sold into slavery as a young girl and is now a world-renowned leader in the anti-trafficking struggle. A portion of the screening features a daring raid on a brothel that keeps underage girls as sex slaves. “We’re going to change Cambodia,” Mam says. “We want you to hear from us. If you don’t listen to us, we’ll keep on talking. We’re not tired at all.” Somaly Mam joined us in the Crawford Family Forum for a discussion immediately following the film.
