Indies come and indies go. But the original indie label – Moses Asch’s Folkways Records, which launched artists like Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, and recorded the music of city noise, frogs, and drums played continents away – lives on today as Smithsonian Folkways… and its story is told in Smithsonian Channel's documentary film WORLDS OF SOUND: THE BALLAD OF FOLKWAYS.
On Tuesday, March 26, KPCC hosted Grand Performances to present this film at The Crawford Family Forum. A post-screening conversation explored the legacy of Asch and the music that’s often meant more than simple song.
Moderator: Quetzal Flores - founder of East L.A. band Quetzal (2013 Grammy
winner for Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album)
Panelists: Raul Pacheco, Ozomatli
Ron Norman, Folkways Publicity and PR Director (1972-1975)
