Legacy of the Chicano Movement: A Discussion with Emerging Los Angeles Artists

Writer and historian Rodrigo Ribera d’Ebre leads a panel discussion that will focus on the legacy of the Chicano Movement as it relates to the work of today’s emerging Latino & Chicano artists. Topics will include muralism and social justice movements in the context of Frank Romero’s politically charged work of the 1980s and 1990s.

Craft Club: Embroidery

Stitch your way into hand embroidery with local artist Veronica Soto. Veronica will demonstrate common stitches such as: back, split, and stem stitches. Bring your imagination and see how you too can transform thread into something special. If you have a certain image you would like to use, make sure to bring in printed copies in various sizes to fit in a 5-7 inch hoop; the simpler the better.

Latin Rhythms: West Coast Swing

Get ready to learn West Coast Swing! West Coast swing borrowed elements from 70’s disco, 50’s bandstand swing, 80’s Country-Western styling and L.A style Lindy hop. Latino teens in New York kept bandstand style swing alive during the 1960s helping shape the future dance of West Coast Swing. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing and remember to bring water.

Film Screening: Ruben Salazar: Man In The Middle

"Man in the Middle" explores the life and death of Mexican- American journalist Ruben Salazar. A reporter for both the LA Times and KMEX, Salazar brought attention to the bourgeoning Chicano movement of the 1960s. Killed during the historical Chicano Moratorium of 1970, Salazar became an icon of the movement in the U.S. and in Mexico.
