Renoir in the 20th Century

February 14–May 9, 2010

At the age of seventy-two, Renoir declared, “I am starting to know how to paint. It has taken me over fifty years’ work to get this far and it’s not finished yet.” Renoir in the 20th Century, on view at LACMA, assembles more than 100 paintings, drawings, and sculptures in a reconsideration of the artist’s late work.

Classical and free, decorative and personal, this last period was dominated by figure paintings and portraits. He also became an example for artists of the next generation—including Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard, Aristide Maillol, and Henri Matisse—at a time when they were finding their way toward modernism. Illuminating parallels between Renoir’s paintings and works by these artists, this exhibition offers an unprecedented look at the iconic artist.

American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765–1915

February 28–May 23, 2010

Organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765–1915 brings together many of the greatest masterpieces of American art, including works by Copley, Homer, Eakins, Cassatt, Sargent, and many more. This exhibition features scenes of ordinary people engaged in daily activities, each contributing to America’s identity as the nation grew from an isolated colony to a world power. According to the New York Times, “[The exhibition] provides glimpses of great chunks of history: the fight for Independence, the settling of the West, the tragedy of slavery and the immigrant-filled tenements of the Lower East Side.” They also note that, “[This] gathering of “iconic” works—drawn from 45 museums across the country—is unlikely to happen again anytime soon. It invites repeated visits…”
