Azar Nafisi is best known as the author of the national bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, a moving and often harrowing portrait of the Islamic revolution in Iran and an incisive exploration of the transformative powers of fiction in a world of tyranny.
Nafisi will be joined in discussion by fellow Iranian-born writer Marjane Satrapi, whose eloquent, black and white graphic novel Persepolis was hailed as a dazzlingly singular achievement. Wise, funny and heartbreaking, Persepolis tells the story of Satrapi's childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.

Arlo Guthrie Solo Reunion Tour - Together at Last

The son of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie grew up surrounded by musicians who helped define their era. Playing in Greenwich Village clubs, Guthrie honed a distinctive style, performing the music that was shaping the country in the 1960s. Now, after 50 years of touring with other musicians, Guthrie returns to his roots as a one-man show, performing with nothing but a couple of guitars and a harmonica.

The Ash Grove 50th Anniversary Legend and Legacy

Since it opened in 1958 until it burned to the ground in 1973 (its third fire), hundreds of notable artists, reflecting various folk styles appeared on the Ash Grove stage - from Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters to Johnny Cash and the Byrds- making the club a unique home to the political and cultural movements of its time.
Two outstanding Royce Hall concerts serve as the heart of this festival commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Ash Grove's inception. This weekend-long celebration features free concerts and workshops.

Qawwali Music of Pakistan Mehr & Sher Ali

Qawwali, the ecstatic devotional music of the Sufis, uses Sufi poetic texts, strong, rapturous voices and hand-clapping rhythms to express the elation of divine love. Revered as two of India's finest Qawwali musicians, brothers Mehr and Sher Ali strive to create a direct channel to divine union through the purity of their singing and the warm resonance of the tabla, a pair of small, different-sized hand drums synonymous with the music of India. Additional Qawwali musicians will join them in a joyous celebration of the spirit.

An Evening with Michael Brook & Djivan Gasparyan

Armenia's greatest living musician, Djivan Gasparyan, and groundbreaking Canadian guitarist and producer Michael Brook reunite on stage in anticipation of their first collaborative CD since their 1998 fusion masterpiece Black Rock. Master of the duduk, the ancient Armenian oboe-like instrument, the Grammy nominated Gasparyan is renowned worldwide through collaborations with the likes of Brain Eno, Kronos Quartet, Peter Gabriel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
