Nuclear Power To Combat Global Warming

As the threat of global warming looms larger, CO2 emission-free nuclear power is being given a second look as an energy alternative in California. Republican State Assemblyman Chuck Devore has proposed legislation that would lift the moratorium on building nuclear power plants in California. Also joining the conversation with Larry is Karl Zichella of the Sierra Club, who argues that global warming can be mitigated without resorting to new nuclear power plants in California.

U.N. Recommends Circumcision For Heterosexual Men

The World Health Organization and the United Nations are recommending that heterosexual men be circumcised, to reduce their risk of contracting the HIV virus. Representatives from the agencies said compelling evidence points to a 60 percent reduction in risk for circumcised men. Larry discusses the recommendation with Dr. Thomas Coates, Professor of Infectious Diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of UCLA's Program on Global Health.

Freeze Damage To California Crops

A large arctic air mass continued to ice up the San Joaquin Valley's billion-dollar orange and lemon crop. Other crops, including avocados and strawberries, also have suffered damage in the cold snap, said state agricultural officials. An official with a citrus trade organization says growers already had lost between 50 and 75 percent of their citrus crops in temperatures that dipped into the teens. The fruits are threatened whenever the mercury falls below 28 degrees. The full impact of the freeze may not be known until inspectors have a chance to check fruit for damage. Larry Mantle talks with representatives of California's agriculture industry about the effect of the freeze on crops and produce prices.
