Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people died in car crash shortly after midnight – just hours after the rookie major leaguer pitched at Angels stadium in Anaheim. Adenhart was 22 years old. KPCC’s Frank Stoltze reports.

Frank Stoltze: Adenhart was the Angels’ number three starter. He threw six scoreless innings in last night’s game against Oakland. It was his fourth major-league start and first of this season.

Police say around 12:30 this morning, a minivan ran a red light in Fullerton and struck a Mitsubishi sports car in which Adenhart was riding. The sport car careened into a light pole.

Two other people who are not part of the Angels organization died. A fourth person is hospitalized in critical condition. Police say the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was captured a short time later.

Angels General Manager Tony Reagins said in a statement that the team was “deeply saddened and shocked” and called Adenhart’s death a “tremendous” loss. Adenhart’s family said “he lived his dream” as a major league baseball player.

Note: The Angels have canceled tonight’s game against Oakland in response to Adenhart’s death.
