A plan to allow overnight camping at three sites in Malibu is on the agenda of the California Coastal Commission. KPCC’s Molly Peterson says it’s meeting in Marina del Rey later this week.

Overnight permits for 29 sites at Ramirez, Escondido, and Corral Canyon parks are one part of a park enhancement plan from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. The proposal would also locate a parking lot at the top of Winding Way, and would allow special events at Ramirez Canyon.

Campfires would be banned at overnight sites, but some people in Malibu doubt how well park police could enforce that. Locals also worry that emergency vehicles couldn’t travel up narrow canyon roads fast enough if fires spread out of control in these areas. The City of Malibu sued to block the enhancements last year, but a superior court judge told Malibu to wait until the coastal commission took action. This week, it will.
