World Oceans Day marked in US

California’s congressional offices are sponsoring talks this week on marine sanctuaries and the ocean economy.

This is the first United Nations-sponsored World Oceans Day and, to coincide with the event, members of Congress are meeting with coastal resource advocates.

Linwood Pendleton of the Coastal Ocean Values Center says leaders on Capitol Hill asked him about linking federal stimulus money to coastal management in California.

Linwood Pendleton: "We have tended to think of these ocean places as benefiting those people on the very extreme edges of our country geographically. But in fact everybody depends on this. Coastal states generate 83 percent of our country’s GDP."
