San Bernardino County to issue medical marijuana ID cards

June 10, 2009 | By Steven Cuevas | KPCC

After years of resistance, San Bernardino County will begin issuing medical marijuana ID cards. KPCC’s Steven Cuevas says the move comes a month after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the county’s challenge to California’s medical marijuana law.

Steven Cuevas: San Bernardino County will start issuing the ID cards within 45 days. Eligible patients must apply with the county public health department. They’ll also have to show a doctor’s prescription for medical marijuana, plus other documentation. After all that is verified, the ID will be issued.

Analiese Kuiper says it’s about time. The Joshua Tree resident uses marijuana to treat an anxiety disorder and other health problems.

Analiese Kuiper: We’ve been given state rights. It’s just that we’ve had rogue law enforcement and county officials who have been implementing their own ideas of what they think should happen. But now we can go forward and implement the law and keep this lawful.

Cuevas: Former San Bernardino County Sheriff Gary Penrod opposed California’s medical marijuana law, arguing it undermined federal drug laws. New Sheriff Rod Hoops grudgingly accepts medical marijuana. But he says counties need to do a better job monitoring patients and dispensaries.
