Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez not running for governor
With Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa deciding not to run for governor next year, there’s been speculation that a prominent Latina politician might jump into the race. But KPCC’s Washington Correspondent Kitty Felde reports a Democrat who fits that bill says she’s fine where she is.
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez says she’s honored that “so many people across California and the country” approached her about running for governor. But the Anaheim Democrat says she already has the “best job in the world.”
U.S. News
Sanchez was first elected to Congress in 1997. She serves as vice chair of the House Homeland Security Committee. The congresswoman nearly entered the race in 2003 when Gray Davis was recalled. But she stepped back when Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante jumped in.
That was the year Arnold Schwarzenegger swept into office. Sanchez has been mentioned as a possible Senate candidate next year if Democrat Barbara Boxer decides not to run for reelection. But so far, Boxer’s going for a fourth term.
