LA County limits access to public swimming at lakes

Blame it on the budget crunch – just as the summer’s heating up, Los Angeles County’s cut swimming hours at three public lakes. Some county-run nature centers will also limit their hours. KPCC’s Cheryl Devall says the restrictions take effect today.

Three lakes – at Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale, Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas and Castaic Lake State Recreation Area – will close to swimmers on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays through September 7th.

LA County Parks and Recreation officials say that even on the days it won’t staff those beaches with lifeguards, the areas will remain open for picnics, fishing and boating.

Seven county-operated nature center buildings from Pearblossom to South El Monte will close on non-holiday Mondays through the summer. Budget constraints led LA County Parks and Rec to reduce staffing hours at the nature centers.

The department is posting signs about the restricted hours at all these sites. For the full list, go online to lacountyparks.org.
