During today’s memorial event, the founder of the record label that propelled the Jackson 5 to stardom recalled Michael Jackson’s breakout moment as a solo act.

The audience at the Staples Center expressed its appreciation as Berry Gordy Jr. described Jackson’s performance at Motown’s 25th anniversary TV special.

Berry Gordy Jr.: "From the first beat of “Billy Jean” and the toss of that hat, I was mesmerized. But when he did his iconic Moonwalk, I was shocked. It was magic! Michael Jackson went into orbit and never came down."

During the two-and-a-half hour memorial, friends and fellow performers recalled a man they described as a transcendent performer and humanitarian who knocked down racial barriers.
