A ballot initiative proposed for next year’s statewide election would restrict the citizenship rights of children born in the United States to illegal immigrants.

Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, told KPCC’s "Patt Morrison" that the measure would underscore the idea that American citizenship is a privilege.

Ira Mehlman: People who are citizens, people who are legal residents of the United States, their children ought to be recognized as children of the United States. Casual visitors, people who are here illegally are in a completely different category and there is no reason why their children ought to be granted automatic United States citizenship."

Organizers behind the referendum are collecting the 488,000 signatures they need to place the measure on the ballot. Opponents say the proposal would foster separate and unequal status for large numbers of people born in this country.
