The president of the Hispanic National Bar Association says opponents have presumed too much bias in appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor’s statement that a wise Latina will apply her perspective to legal decisions.
Ramona Romero told KPCC’s "Patt Morrison" that she doesn’t believe questions about those words from the Senate Judiciary committee are out of line.
Ramona Romero: “The senators are doing what they believe is appropriate and that is their prerogative. I thought some of the senators went a little bit too far in the sense that they did not quite listen to what she was saying and some of the questions were repeated over and over again. But that’s obviously within their right.”
Romero said that the Supreme Court nominee’s remarks about her ethnicity and working class heritage do not mean her perspective predetermines a particular result when she judges a case.
