This afternoon, the House of Representatives gets an update on the spread of H1N1 or “swine flu.” But over on the Senate side, the news is a little closer to home. Nearly half a dozen Senate pages have been quarantined. It’s suspected they have the virus. KPCC’s Washington Correspondent Kitty Felde reports.

The Senate doctor isn’t sure the five pages have swine flu. But they do have the classic symptoms: slight fever, sore throat, and a cough. Last night, Senators got the memo that the pages are sick, most likely with influenza, quite possibly the H1N1 virus.

U.S. News

Pages are high school juniors from around the country who spend a semester on Capitol Hill, shuttling legislation and letters from office to office. They live together in a residence hall and that’s where the five sick pages are quarantined, kept away from their peers and from lawmakers and staffers in the Senate.

They’ll stay there until the doctor clears them. It’s likely that won’t come until after the Senate adjourns August 7th for its summer recess.
