The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Friday to ban new digital billboards and supergraphics – those giant signs that wrap several stories of a building.
Dennis Hathaway of the Coalition to Ban Billboard Blight called the vote a good first step.
Dennis Hathaway: "These things are potential traffic hazards, they are energy hogs, and they produce a lot of light that is basically light pollution that affects people in their houses, affects people’s views."
But Hathaway and other billboard opponents don’t believe the city council’s ban goes far enough. Opponents of the ban – billboard companies and some building owners – say it’s an unconstitutional block to free speech.
