Harbor officials have approved a plan to improve water quality around San Pedro and Long Beach.

Bob Kanter directs environmental affairs at the Port of Long Beach. He says the biggest challenge is toxic sediment in the water from operations that ceased long ago.

Bob Kanter: "We inherited some gifts from Navy in the past. And we are currently cleaning those up with a very well thought out plan. And there are some other hotspots in our port here in Los Angeles that we will take a likewise approach to get rid of those sediments in a responsible manner."

The joint Water Resources Action Plan also calls for better maintenance around fueling and cargo areas, better storm water runoff control, and improved limits on dust and trash.
