Some Cal State Fullerton students are out of luck. KPCC’s Susan Valot says the university has started canceling classes because of state budget cuts.

The canceled classes are in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The cancellations come as an unwelcome surprise to students because they came so late; other classes that undergrads might have picked up instead are already full.

In a letter posted on Cal State Fullerton’s Web site, the acting dean of the college says she “deeply regrets the need to cancel the classes” and “regrets the disruption” to students’ academic plans. But Acting Dean Angela Della Volpe says further cancellations are possible if the budget situation worsens. Like other UC and Cal State campuses, Cal State Fullerton is also requiring furlough days for faculty and staff to save money.

What Volpe fails to mention is that where the blame also lies is the fact that CSUF has consistently over-enrolled students. This means that those excess students are not funded by the state. The state funds the individual CSUs based on a target student enrollment that the campuses are given. The campuses do not get any funding for those excess students. Why does Fullerton do this? According to the schools president they want to admit as many students as possible. Those excess students could have just as well have gone to the campuses that don't meet their target enrollment.

So, now this practice has caught up to Fullerton and the students paying the price by the getting their classes canceled. I don't think the president of CSUF has much foresight.

Students can enroll at University of the West in Rosemead for accredited courses that are transferrable to Cal State University, for roughly the same price as CSU tuition. No classes have been cancelled at UWest, no long lines, no overcrowding. There are options. http://www.uwest.edu.
