A sci-fi thriller and a sci-fi romance came out this weekend at the top of the box office.

Sony pictures released District 9 after an unusual marketing campaign aimed at creating curiosity and piquing people’s interest. The film depicts extra-terrestrials on earth forced to live in squalor. The ads for instance on bus stop benches said the seats were for humans only. District 9 brought in $37 million. It’s produced by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, and it is the feature film debut for commercial and music video director Niell Blomkamp.
GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra was second with $22 million its second weekend.
A romantic sci-fi story transporting lovers through time landed at third place in the box office. The Time Travelers Wife brought in $19 million.
