Supporters of a public option in federal health care reform legislation have scheduled a march in south Orange County today. KPCC’s Debra Baer reports that they’re targeting a congressman.

Debra Baer: The congressman is Republican John Campbell. He represents the 48th district that includes Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. That’s where Alan Boinus lives. He helped to start a group called “Free Enterprise Advocates for Public Option and Health Reform.”

Alan Boinus: We were motivated by community outrage, by the distortions and lies that have been depicted in the media about the public option by particularly vociferous people known as “teabaggers” appearing at town hall meetings and by our own congressman who has refused to have a town hall meeting on health reform.

Baer: Congressman John Campbell’s office did not return phone calls seeking comment about the planned demonstration. Boinus said he expects more than 200 people to march near Campbell’s district office in Fashion Island.

Boinus: We want him to know there are a large number of constituents who are in favor of the public option.

Baer: The so-called public option has become one of the most controversial elements of the health care reform debate. Members of Congress are expected to resume their work on reform legislation after Labor Day.
