Mayor Villaraigosa, union workers celebrate AnsaldoBreda deal with MTA

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says the new AnsaldoBreda manufacturing plant and headquarters in downtown Los Angeles will employ 600 workers, create 1,000 temporary construction jobs, and add more than a thousand support jobs in the region.

The Italian company AnsaldoBreda will build a new manufacturing plant and headquarters in downtown Los Angeles as part of a $300 million deal to produce 100 light rail cars for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Stoltze: Last week, AnsaldoBreda secured a $300 million deal with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build 100 light rail cars for the agency. As part of the package, the company will build a new manufacturing plant and headquarters downtown that'll employ about 600 people.
It’ll take another thousand workers to construct the facility – that’s a big reason labor unions lobbied hard for Metro to sign the deal despite concerns about AnsaldoBreda’s performance on previous contracts. One economist says the project will create more than a thousand additional support jobs in the region.
