John Wayne Airport handles 9 million passengers a year. But many Orange County fliers still prefer to use L.A. International Airport. KPCC’s Cheryl Devall says they’ll have an easier way to make that connection this winter holiday season.

For several years L.A. World Airports, the agency that operates L.A. International, has offered nonstop FlyAway bus service between the airport and Los Angeles Union Station, Van Nuys, and Westwood. The FlyAway’s intended to help ease traffic and parking congestion at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Now the airport agency’s worked out an agreement with the city of Irvine to expand that bus service. The coach-style FlyAway would pick up and deposit passengers at the Irvine Station transit hub on Barranca Parkway.

It’s a 50-mile trip between Irvine and LAX. L.A. World Airports proposes a $25 one-way fare – less than taxis and door-to-door shuttles charge for the same trip. The airport agency board plans to set rates and a start date for the Irvine FlyAway at a future meeting.
