Survey looks at Internet use by Latina registered voters

A group that advocates on behalf of Latinas in California Wednesday released a survey of the state’s Latina registered voters.

Frank Stoltze: Any political analyst will tell you that this is an increasingly important demographic. The state has more than one-and-a-half million registered Latina voters, and the number’s growing. As with other voters, the Internet’s a good way to reach them.

Helen Torres: Overwhelmingly, Latinas are starting to get engaged in social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter.

Stoltze: At the same time, 63 percent seldom use those sites, according to Helen Torres who heads HOPE, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality. She says Latinas with children are most likely to use the Internet.

Torres: An overwhelming number of them, 72 percent, have children under the age of 18 living with them.

Stoltze: The survey is part of a campaign to help Latina registered voters become better informed and more politically active by using the Internet.
