Governor Schwarzenegger signs new ammunition law
Governor Schwarzenegger Thursday signed into law new restrictions on ammunition sales.
The new law requires gun dealers to keep information on who buys bullets, and makes it illegal to knowingly sell handgun ammunition to people banned from owning firearms.
The governor rejected a similar bill last year.
"I’m a firm believer, of course, in the Second Amendment – the right of every law abiding citizen to bear arms. That is why I've consistently rejected bills that unnecessarily restrict that right."
But Schwarzenegger said he could support this bill, authored by Democratic State Assemblyman Kevin DeLeon.
"This bill, appropriate balance protecting the rights of the gun owners and protecting the rights of the people to feel safe and secure in their communities."
The new law, which takes effect next year, also requires vendors of handgun ammunition transfers and sales to store ammunition behind the counter or in a secure manner, and requires the face-to-face transfer of ammunition sales.
Thirteen California cities, including L.A., already have similar laws.
Gun control advocates say their effect is limited because regulations remain a patchwork across the country, so it’s easy to buy bullets on what remains a robust black market.

This is just one more BAD law. I have looked and can not find (1)one killing that was stopped due to this law a any of the 13 citys and LA. When are you going to just tell the truth You fear what you do not understand. This may shock you CRIME. and citizen over run by a 3rd world. You truley don't get it and we end up with the bill.

I feel like I am being forced deeper and deeper away from the Second Amendment, while curable roots of crime and gun violence is being ignored day by day in favor of flashy laws that keep inconveniencing law abiding citizens.
Still, it is better than the 50 rounds per month idea that was being tossed about.

This absurd and un-constitutional new law has helped me to make an important decision: Time to move my family and my business out of California.
I'm sure many more businesses will continue to follow. I refuse to give any more tax dollars to a state government that is so out of touch, and which continues to act against the most productive of it's citizens. I'll look for freedom elsewhere. Good riddance, Sacramento.

mmmeh, like they said we already have strict laws here in LA (I live in the SFV)

Another law aimed at criminals that in reality will only adversely affect law abiding citizens. Enforce all the gun laws currently on the books and we would overflow all the prisons in the state.

"I’m a firm believer, of course, in the Second Amendment – the right of every law abiding citizen to bear arms. So I am going to take away your bullets instead."
A gun without a bullet is like an actor without a teleprompter.

Norm, how can you expect to find numbers about people NOT killed because of the laws passed restricting ammo sales in those 13 cities?? Who do you expect to be recording the number of people who do NOT buy ammo because they're not allowed to have guns.
If you legally own a gun then the government already has a record of it. Why should you be afraid of the government further recording whether or not you are buying ammo to use it in? Unless you are doing something illegal, how are you so important that the state government should care to zero in on your ammo buying habits to investigate you?

They say this law will make people feel more secure in their community. This is a false sense of security for ignorant peaople. What makes me feel secure is my having a firearm to protect myself. When was the last time you actually saw a policeman stop a crime in progress. Most of the time they show up after the crime is commited. Which needs to be done to find the perp. But it is too late for the victims. We should have the right to take personal responsability and protect ourselves. These laws are designed to inhibit law biding citizens. Criminals don't get weapons through the proper channels idiots. So don't lie to us. This is another collective attempt to ultimitely irradicate guns completely. That photo of Schwarzenegger and law enforcement officials all laughing during the signing makes me sick.

These liberal politcians don't have the spine to go after the real criminals. Instead, they prey on the citizens with these unconstitutional laws. So, to you liers in Sacramento. Don't you dare speak to me of FREEDOM.

If you think about it do crimanals youse legal weapons? It also means that I can't buy ammo on line for 10 to 20 dollers a boxIwill have to pay what ever the local store wants to charge me because I can only buy it there. What if I shot 500 to 1000 rounds at my gun club every couple of weeks or so, that means I have to answer to the government with what i'm doing with them.Do you think crimanals care about breaking laws if they want to get bullets all they have to do is cross state lines and buy them there.

Cant anyone see that this is just another inch of leverage this stupid CA goverment will have over us. I follow laws that are reasonable but if its another law controlling our guns they can go to hell.Controlling our guns gives them more control over us case and piont if we have no guns or very little ammo becuase of some stupid laws how would we as good citizens fight against them? Im sorry but papers and meetings will only take you so far our modern day govt doesent care about what we have to say.Their to busy making sure that convicts in jail get their choclate cake and making sure illegal immigrants get their rights .Its time we face it they are "killing" our country and everyhting it has ever stood for and I guess we are just supposed to sit and watch. Hope your comfortable.

More paperwork, more money spent to track law abiding citizens rather than the prisons to hold the criminals. Talk about government waste.

Another liberal lying politician sells out to socialism and, ultimately, tyranny by repudiating his oath to defend the Constitution and the personal freedoms it guaratees. Patriots take note. The lines are being drawn.

Stupid people put obama in office for change. Well how do you like your change, now? You people in CALIFORNIA need to kick out all these power hungry polititions and install those that care about the constitution. If obama can get our guns then he can control us. This DICTATOR wants to control our country and the rest of the world. He is ONE REAL SICKO. Schwarze negger is just a worthless coward he has no balls!!!!!

This argument that people such as Richard continue to spew "If you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to fear" has gotten really old. Treat the criminals like criminals and leave the citizens alone. If my car or my person specifically fits the description for a crime then I can accept a search otherwise leave me alone. The same holds true in the case of ammo. Unless I'm involved in a crime, leave me and my buying habits alone.
You know its funny. When I was young I always heard the terms liberal and conservative. I thought that liberal meant that we were free to do as we pleased and conservative was restrictive. Around 10 years old I began to really see the reality of these two ideals. The liberals are forever trying to control others, must be a disease.

Uhhhhh I'd just like to add that A REPUBLICAN signed this into law AND runs your state.......yet all I see is reterick about Democrats and the "O" word.... what's that about ignorance? I understand your pain but no one listens when you don't get it right

Well, Richard, if we already have our guns registered and the government knows what guns we have, then why bother messing with the ammo. Your arguement holds no water. The bad guys have neither registered guns and will not register ammo, they will just steal it. Then, what you have is only knowledge about law abiding citizens, which isn't the problem anyway. You've just succeeded in disarming us and our ability to defend ourselves. This is liberalism at it's moronic height of glory.

This registration procedure violates the supreme law of the land -- the constitution. It's illegal. This sort of usurpation of rights will continue as long as we consent to it. I guess Ben Franklin said it best: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither" and James Madison: "A government that does not trust its law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms is itself unworthy of trust". How do you muster any respect for this law?!!

Ammunition is what defines a gun as a "firearm" (arms). As for gun violence??..no gun has ever pulled its own trigger, so here is another stupid thoughtless decision that does not address the root cause. California..."a country by itself". And by the way, why don't they pass a law prohibiting the violent use of guns on television and in motion pictures. Our CA politicians are useless and overpaid.

Hey Russ I noticed nobody had a reply for your comment maybe you should change the last letter of your name to an h. These are the same people that backed the guy who made it so Gov. could come into my home and search and tap my phone without probable cause. All under the quize of home security. Nobody complained about losing those rights and freedoms. Start waking up America, it doesn't matter who is in charge, they want to control us any way they can. One power just does it in our faces, the other tries to scare us into excepting it. I'd rather have it in my face so I can see it coming!
