Deputy Chief Michael Downing was named the Los Angeles Police Department's interim chief today. Downing will run the LAPD until a new chief is selected. (Audio: KPCC's Brian Watt reports on Downing's appointment.)

Downing is expected to lead the department for approximately two weeks until the mayor and city council approve a new chief. Downing currently runs the counterterrorism unit.

A short list of three candidates for the permanent chief position are expected to be announced today. Bratton's last day on the job is Saturday.

Police Commission President John Mack says all three finalists were chosen unanimously by the commission after a three-and-a-half hour closed-door meeting this afternoon.
