A towering fountain of water gushes onto a Los Angeles street from a ruptured water main Monday, Nov. 2, 2009. The city's Department of Water and Power said the 54-inch water main sent thousands of gallons of recycled water pouring onto Van Nuys Boulevard in mid-morning.

November is off to a wet start for firefighters and DWP crews. Three water mains have broken since yesterday in South Los Angeles, Orange, and Van Nuys.

A geyser shot 20 feet in the air Monday morning when another city pipe broke at the 7200 block of Van Nuys Boulevard in Van Nuys.

A Los Angeles Fire Department crew was dispatched at 10:35 a.m. to stop the water flow near Sherman Way. The geyser sprayed for about an hour before a crew from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was able to stop it.

The pipe that broke was an eight-inch connector to a 54-inch main. The large main and connector transport recycled water used for irrigation and industrial purposes. Brooks Baker of the LADWP said that the break was not expected to affect residential customers.

Two mains broke before dawn on Sunday in the city of Orange and in South Los Angeles.

Near 1896 Sacramento Street in Orange, a water main broke around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Orange Fire Department. About 100,000 gallons of water flooded the street before crews were able to turn off the water.

Before 4 a.m. on Sunday, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported to the intersection of 71st Street and Harvard Boulevard to stop a six-inch break. DWP spokesperson Maychelle Yee said service was not interrupted to any DWP customers.

Light blue pins indicate breaks within the last week.
