Free rides today: Metro Gold Line East Side extension opens
The new leg of the Metro gold line is open starting today. Celebrations are getting underway today at four of the new stops, including Union Station, Little Tokyo, Mariachi Plaza, and East L.A. Civic Center. (Audio: KPCC’s Shirley Jahad talks with KPCC’s Patricia Nazario at Mariachi Plaza just before festivities get underway this morning.)
All the rides along the entire Gold Line are free today – from Pasadena to Union Station and the new portion east to Atlantic Blvd. The new six mile section has been under construction for five years. It cost nearly $900 million to build. It serves one of the most densely populated areas of L.A. where many residents depend on public transit.
