Cops in riot gear keep an eye on protesters at UCLA
About 100 University of California police officers tried to keep student protests under control on the UCLA campus today. Officers wore riot gear and used barricades and pepper ball rifles during demonstrations against the student fee increases the UC Regents approved.
Chanting, “No cuts. No fees. Education should be free," hundreds of UC students from Northern and Southern California participated in the protest.

UC Irvine English major Diana Phuong bundled together three months’ rent to buy 500 T-shirts to give out to her fellow demonstrators.
Police arrested a 21-year-old UCLA senior, Maritza Santian. She stood near barricades, with a Walkie-Talkie, relaying police activity to a self-appointed group of student security monitors.
“I’m really frustrated," she shouted. At what? At the regents? At the police? At the barricades?
Santian wasn’t able to answer before officers hauled her away.
Amid the protests, the regents voted to raise student fees by 32 percent.
The cost of an education at one of the 10 UC campuses will rise by nearly $600 in the spring, then another $1,300 next fall.
For the first time, it’ll cost more than $10,000 dollars a year for a student to attend the University of California. Protesters say the fee increases will keep a quality education beyond the reach of many students from working families.
UC Regents say the fee hike is necessary because the system faces a half-billion dollar budget deficit – largely because the state has cut spending on education.

Hey just keep voting Democrat. I am happy that this is happening to the UCLA students. This will be an eye opening experience. Maybe now they will see the truth. Keep voting Democrat and things will just keep getting worse.

The CA Governor is a Republican. A stupid action hero who only won because of his Kennedy wife. Republicans always run the economy into the ground. That's what they've been doing since 1929. They create Depressions.

Ismael,
You have no clue about what you're talking about do you? It's a Democrat AND Republican problem of fiscal management. Think before you make such absurd comments.

Both sides have their problems of the same magnitude. The ideologies of these parties are simply too extreme and end up making solutions problematic due to external pressure for my taste. Libertarians ftw.

Where does this sense of entitlement come from? Money does not grow on trees. Are all these student protesters willing to pay 50% or more in taxes to support subsidized education? By the way, What has Obama done for you lately? Keep voting democrat until there is nothing but gov't. and we are all slaves because it is fair for everyone to be at the same level.
On a second note, have you seen some of these pictures of the protestors? Dont they look like terrorists with their covered faces? Reminds me of Hamas and the PLO.

This is a response to Jasons comments. I was one of the protestors at UCLA Fighting for my education and the education for future generations. I work two jobs and go to school full-time, so as far as being taxed you're not the only one. They're raising our fees, but they're still cutting teachers, classes, and resources. We're paying more, but getting less. we don't know where the money is going to. This state is always bailing itself out on the backs of students because your taxes aren't cutting it because its not being allocated to the public school system.
And for your information we had our faces covered because the police were trying to tear gas us idiot. During our peaceful protest.

Jason-
Not sure if you've noticed, but the US has moved to a service-based economy. We need college-educated people in order to provide these services and keep things moving forward. If higher education continues to become the domain of the wealthy, California is only headed for deeper and more troubling economic sufferings.
"Let the free market work," and "if you want a degree, then pay for it" are the confused cries of two groups- a few who have already amassed greedy sums of money, and those who suffer from the illusion that they will some day become rich and will need to protect their bank accounts. With the privatization of our public schools, the only class mobility to speak of will be folks moving from middle to lower.
This is not an issue of entitlement. This is about protecting the quality of life in CA.
