A couple and a teenager died when a sport utility vehicle rear-ended a big rig on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sunland and burst into flames before dawn today, authorities said.

Two younger children who were in the SUV were taken to Childrens Hospital to be checked out, but they were not believed to have been seriously injured in the collision just east of Sunland Boulevard shortly after 5 a.m.

The trucker was taken to Providence-Holy Cross Medical Center to be treated.

The fire spread to some brush along the freeway, but firefighters were able to put it out quickly, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The bodies of a man, woman and a teenage boy died in the SUV, which was pulling a trailer, Humphrey said.

Two children, 8 and 10 years old, got out of the vehicle, he said.

The big rig driver complained of chest pain, Humphrey said.

It took about 60 firefighters less than 30 minutes to put out the brush fire, which scorched about a quarter-acre, Humphrey said.

A SigAlert was issued at 5:39 a.m., with one westbound lane open, California Highway Patrol Officer Jennifer Connolly said.
