Across the Southland this Thanksgiving Day, businesses, charitable organizations, and a wide variety of volunteers are offering meals to people in need. Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles took on the atmosphere of a summer street festival.

At the intersection of 6th and San Julian streets, a blues band played as the Midnight Mission served Thanksgiving fare to 2,300 people.

A half block away, Radio Korea and the Bull Kogi Korean BBQ truck ran out of 400 beef and kimchi burritos in less than two hours. A man who worked at the truck said, in a perfect world, nobody would line up, meaning nobody would be in need.

Another half block down San Julian, the French Confection Bakery distributed 2,500 free cakes from the back of a van. George Wahhab started the business 30 years ago in Riverside. He’s served free cakes on Thanksgiving in downtown Los Angeles for a decade.
