LA Times sportswriter Mike Penner, dies; suicide suspected

The Los Angeles Times sportswriter who made international headlines when he decided he had been born the wrong sex, and who publicly changed both his byline and his gender, has died, the newspaper announced today.
Mike Penner, 52, was found dead at his home. Suicide is suspected, the newspaper announced at its Web site.

Penner started using the name Christine Daniels and continued covering sports, and also wrote a blog about his experience. The newspaper reported that he resumed writing under his male name last year.

This is a sad story, and one that I hadn't heard anything about until today.
One note on the phrasing in your article: I would imagine this person didn't "decide he had been born the wrong sex" but rather "decided to reveal" that experience, which had probably been going on for a long time and been kept painfully secret.
