Former Redondo Beach police officer allegedly embezzles over $75,000

Former Redondo Beach police officer Gene Tomatani, who allegedly embezzled over $75,000 from a police officer's association., appeared for arraignment today at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. His arraignment was postponed to Jan. 8, 2010.

Tomatani paid $12,000 toward restitution at today's hearing. Commissioner Alan Rubin postponed Tomatani's arraignment and allowed him to remain free on his own recognizance. If convicted, Tomatani faces up to four years in state prison.

As either president or treasurer for the Redondo Beach Police Officer's Association, Tomatani allegedly embezzled a total of $72,388.56 between May 2004 and May 2008. He's also accused of embezzling $3,000 from the City of Redondo Beach.

Tomatani was relieved of duty in November 2008 when the money was discovered missing. In October 2009, he submitted his resignation while administrative hearings were pending, according to prosecutors.
