2 storms expected to drop rain in Southern California this week

A quick moving storm should drop up to one-third of an inch on the Los Angeles Basin Wednesday, with the sun making a new appearance Thursday, and a second more powerful storm likely late Friday,
according to the National Weather Service.

The first storm is not expected to drop much more than one-third of an inch, if that, especially in the mountains and along the San Gabriel Mountains, said National Weather Service meteorologist Todd Hall.

Until then, clouds will be gathering, indicating that El Nino is still very much in effect, Hall said.

As of today, 13.3 inches of rain has fallen. In normal years, by this time, about 10.02 inches has fallen, but last year at this time only 8.75 inches had fallen, Hall said.

If two inches fall between the two storms expected by the weekend, the rainfall totals will nearly equal the 15.4 inches that fall all season long in a normal season, he said.

The second storm "has the potential to have a lot more moisture and being colder, bringing threats to the burn areas,'' Hall said.

With the waters still warmer in the Pacific than normal, the El Nino could continue, bringing rain to the Los Angeles basin through the end of March, Hall said.
