Legislature tries to end California employee furloughs
SACRAMENTO — Both houses of the California Legislature have approved a Democratic bill attempting to end three-day-a-month furloughs for nearly 80,000 state employees.
The measure by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg approved Monday would reverse some of the 200,000 state employee furloughs first imposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It would apply only to those workers who are paid with funds from the federal government, user fees, or other sources outside the state general fund.
But the bill requires the Republican governor's approval, and his office says he is unlikely to sign it.
Steinberg, of Sacramento, argues that the furloughs cost the state more than they save in wages because state auditors and money collectors are spending less time at work.
