Bimbo Bakeries was fined $230,535 for 20 violations of state safety and health laws at three of its plants around the state, a state agency announced today.
Citations were issued at Bimbo Bakeries in Montebello, Escondido and South San Francisco following recent inspections that found the company was allegedly operating unsafe equipment, according to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
"Our primary concern is for the safety of employees at these job sites and the steps that Bimbo needs to take to ensure a safe work environment,'' Cal/OSHA Chief Len Welsh said in a statement.
"We believe there are systemic problems which have resulted in numerous employees suffering amputations due to unguarded equipment,'' he said.
The Montebello facility was issued six citations totaling $30,250. The violations included no emergency eye wash or shower equipment, incomplete hazardous energy control procedures and unguarded pulleys, sprockets and shafts on equipment, according to Cal/OSHA.
