Dog shot, killed by police after attacking man in Long Beach

A pit bulldog attacked a man in Long Beach and police shot the animal dead, authorities said today.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday near Livingston Drive and Saint Joseph Avenue, said Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department. The injured man was taken to a hospital, Pratt said. No officers were hurt.

According to the preliminary investigation, police went to the residential area on a report that a man was being attacked by a dog, and fatally shot the animal, Pratt said. The circumstances of the shooting were under investigation.
